I would suggest testing your car polish on a small, non-visible section to make sure that it won't have adverse effects on the finish. I try to work from the top to the bottom of the car-there is a great chance of having dirt left on the bottom of the car. If you make that your last section, you won't rub dirt all over the entire car-it will be concentrated to that one area. When you have finished applying, buff the car to a shine using a clean, soft cloth. I prefer to buy a towel to use specifically for this process, but an old house towel will do the job as long as it's clean and soft.
